SUMMARY:Open Doors Poetry with Leanne Moden
DESCRIPTION:Visit the studio on the top floor of the National Civil War Centre where Open Doors artist-in-residence\, Leanne Moden\, has been writing poems\, stories and scripts based on the museum’s collections. \nWhile you’re there\, try your hand at Leanne’s self-led wordy arts and crafts. \nOpen Doors is a programme of arts activity that is part of the heritage and culture offer in Newark and Sherwood. In 2023\, the Palace Theatre and the National Civil War Centre were awarded funding from Arts Council England to become National Portfolio Organisations. The three-year programme\, Open Doors\, increases creative opportunities for young people and underserved groups\, and helps us support the needs and interests of our communities. \nLeanne has also written Newark Book Festival a beautiful 10th Birthday Poem\, I Know You. You can read and watch a reading of the full poem here.  \nSuitable for all ages. Children must be accompanied by an adult during their visit.

SUMMARY:Wildlife & Words
DESCRIPTION:Join award-winning writer and facilitator Emma Oldham for a gentle\, creative workshop that blends walking\, urban wildlife\, observation and writing\, that invites you to slow down and see Newark with fresh eyes. \nThis 90-minute session invites you to slow down and see Newark with fresh eyes. Through a relaxed guided walk\, you’ll be encouraged to notice the wilder side of Newark Town that we often miss — sounds\, textures\, movement\, atmosphere and creatures — gathering inspiration from the natural world around you. \nAfter a guided five-senses observation exercise\, we’ll return indoors to turn what we’ve gathered into words. Through short\, guided writing prompts\, you’ll get the chance to transform your observations into poetry or micro-fiction. There’s no pressure to share\, but participants are warmly invited to read their work in a supportive\, encouraging space. \nPerfect for beginners and experienced writers alike\, this workshop focuses on the simple but powerful idea that writing begins with noticing. Just bring along a pen and a notebook.  \nFor the start of the walk\, meet outside Newark Town Hall\, ready to leave at 1pm (please arrive early). The workshop will take place at the Learning Room at Palace Theatre.
