The joys and perils of creating older neurodiverse female characters with Lucy Atkins.

From Vivian in The Night Visitor to Dee in Magpie Lane, and now Astrid, the ‘scatty’ 82-year-old heroine of her latest novel, Windmill Hill, Lucy Atkins has long been fascinated by what it is to be an undiagnosed older woman.

Having raised three neurodiverse children, and with a rich family history of neurodiversity, this is a subject close to Lucy’s heart that lies at the very centre of her creative work.

Interviewed by crime fiction author Sarah Ward.
